Banksy is probably the most famous "uknown" artist. Almost everyone heard of him but nobody knows who really is (some believe that his real name is Robert Banks). Mainly a graffiti artist and famous for his "controversial ways" of expression, Banksy is my favourite artist not only because of his radical ideas of expression but also because of his political messages.
Check his website for all his artworks and also a very interesting video in youtube that covers the "illusive" and infamous Banksy (it also contains some footage from the artist).
